Welcome to the League of Science Fiction Explorers

Every great journey begins with a single page.
Join us for the Monthly meeting of the League of Science Fiction Explorers, Curious Owl Bookshop’s official Science Fiction Book Club.
Whether you’re fascinated by distant galaxies, time travel, artificial intelligence, alternate histories, first contact, or the technologies of tomorrow, you’ll find fellow explorers here. From Jules Verne and H.G. Wells to Andy Weir and James S.A. Corey, science fiction has always invited us to ask one simple question:
We shall:
  • Meet fellow science fiction readers.
  • Share our favorite authors, books, and ideas.
  • Discuss the kinds of science fiction we’d most enjoy exploring together.
  • Choose our books as a group.
  • Guide future meeting dates and the direction of the club.
  • Whether you’ve been reading science fiction your entire life or are just discovering the genre, you’re warmly welcome. Just read the book before you show up.
There is no cost to participate. You don’t need a reservation. Just bring your curiosity.

Our book for the month is…

Dungeon Crawler Carl

By Matt Dinniman

Imagine waking up one morning to discover that Earth has become the world’s deadliest reality show.

Carl isn’t a chosen hero. He isn’t a soldier or a wizard. He’s just an ordinary guy who happens to be outside wearing boxer shorts when civilization literally collapses around him. His only companion? Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s prize-winning show cat, who suddenly becomes intelligent, outspoken, and every bit as determined to survive as Carl is.

Together they’re forced into an enormous underground dungeon where every level is deadlier than the last, every monster is trying to kill them, and trillions of viewers across the galaxy are watching for entertainment.

Part science fiction, part fantasy, part dark comedy, and part action adventure, Dungeon Crawler Carl somehow manages to be hilarious, suspenseful, surprisingly heartfelt, and almost impossible to put down. Beneath the outrageous premise is a story about friendship, perseverance, and refusing to give up—even when the universe seems determined to make you fail. To put it succinctly, imagine if you crossed Dungeons and Dragons with Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And then televised it.

Whether you’re a longtime science fiction fan or just looking for an unforgettable adventure, this is one of those books people finish and immediately start recommending to everyone they know.
