When Young Adult Fiction Stops Being For Young Adults
Young Adult fiction may no longer be fiction written for young adults. With adults now representing a substantial share of the YA market, the category is increasingly becoming fiction about adolescence, written and consumed by adults. The danger is not simply mature subject matter, but adult authors giving teenage characters knowledge, emotional frameworks, and hindsight they could not yet possess. Drawing on the Clarity Paradox and the publishing industry’s own arguments about authentic voices, this article asks an uncomfortable question: Have we made YA more mature, or have we eliminated Young Adult literature altogether?
