Fantasy Season is in full swing
Curious Owl Bookshop is waiting for you in Spindale, North Carolina.
Fantasy Season began on Harry Potter’s birthday, and it is well underway on our shelves and in our clubs. We’re already looking ahead to Mystery Season, which kicks off October 31st – just in time for Halloween and our Scariest Book gathering.
Built on the belief that curiosity is the beginning of wisdom, our shelves are filled with books that challenge, comfort, inspire, and endure. From beloved classics to new discoveries, every title is chosen with care for readers who value substance over noise.
A great bookshop is more than books. It is atmosphere, discovery, and community – a place where stories are treated as treasures and readers feel they belong.
Stop in. We’re in the social district, so if you’ve been to Brewdega, Barley’s, or Pour Boys, bring your drink and settle in somewhere built just for book lovers.
See you soon. We’re open seven days a week.

Young Adult fiction may no longer be fiction written for young adults. With adults now representing a substantial share of the YA market, the category is increasingly becoming fiction about adolescence, written and consumed by adults. The danger is not simply mature subject matter, but adult authors giving teenage characters knowledge, emotional frameworks, and hindsight they could not yet possess. Drawing on the Clarity Paradox and the publishing industry’s own arguments about authentic voices, this article asks an uncomfortable question: Have we made YA more mature, or have we eliminated Young Adult literature altogether?

Every time the cost of expression drops, voices multiply. Authority weakens. Gatekeeping rebrands itself as standards. Paper once enforced silence. Then typewriters. Then the physical stamina to type for hours. Then editors and agents and publishing houses. Then formatting and cover design and distribution networks.

When you finish a book alone, your interpretation becomes the interpretation. You never discover what you missed. A monthly book club shatters that certainty. Someone else read the same words and saw something entirely different. They caught the clue you overlooked, hated the character you loved, noticed the parallel you missed. On the friction of other minds, the discipline of deadlines, and why books are better when you have someone to fight with about them.

You know that feeling when you buy a book? That little thrill of anticipation, knowing a new story or idea is about to become part

There’s something quietly miraculous about a new book sitting on a shelf. Someone, a person you’ve never met, spent months, perhaps years, hunched over a
Like the Leaky Cauldron, we’re a little hidden, but easy to find once you know the secret.
Curious Owl is on the back side of 181 West Main Street, and our front door faces Davis Street. Set your map to 340 Davis Street in Google Maps, or 240 Davis Street in Apple Maps (yes, really), not 181 West Main, and it will take you right to the door.
Parking: There’s sometimes street parking on Davis Street. There’s also a municipal parking lot diagonally across the street. We like to say it’s Diagon Alley… across the street.
Accessible entrance: Handicap parking is in front of the building on Main Street. From there, the sidewalk runs down the side of the building to our door, which has ramp access.
